Peugeot 205 GTi is the origin of a new classic
Our story of legends begins back in 1983 when Michael Jackson’s The Thriller was the top-selling record of that year. Thoroughbred racehorse Shergar mysteriously vanished. The Peugeot 205 was launched as a successor to Paulo Martin’s Peugeot 104 supermini. The elegant Peugeot 205 was created by Gerard Welter with an interior designed by Paul Bracq.
But, the French automaker soon realized its potential and a mere 12 months later was followed by its Peugeot 2005 GTi. The first version was launched with the 1.6-liter engine that produced 105bhp. It weighed just 9000kg and had the capability of the 0-60mph speed in 8.4 seconds and the top speed of 122mph!
But the super motor wasn’t done. The year 1986 was the first time Peugeot launched the new 126bhp 1.9-litre GTi. Its 0-60mph acceleration was cut to 7.6 seconds, and the top speed increased to 127mph.

Peugeot 205 GTi timeline
March 1983: Peugeot 205 line introduced in France.
September 1983: The right-hand-drive Peugeot 205 was launched in the UK.
April 1984: The 1.6-litre GTi with 105bhp GTi is available in the UK at £6,245.
February 1985: Minor modifications, such as soft suspensions, were made to enhance the ride.
May 1986: The power from 1.6 GTi increased to 115bhp. This was achieved using bigger valves, an ahead redesign for the cylinder, and a new camshaft design.
June 1986: Created and partially assembled by Italian car maker Pininfarina The convertible 1.6 CTI is launched.
December 1986: The 1.9-liter 130bhp GTi is made available. Outside of the engine, the major distinctions were:
- The half-leather seat disc brakes everywhere and upgraded suspension.
- Larger wheels.
- Electric windows in the standard version.
The price was PS 8,445.
September 1987: In September, phase 1.5 205 GTi model was released and featured significant changes to the trim. This included modifications to the steering wheel (making it less prone to rattle) and the steering wheel with three spokes with better quality plastics and a distinct pattern for the seats. Some think that the elegance of the Bracq-designed interior was lost when these modifications were made.
August 1989: A further modification. The new BE3 gearbox, as well as a larger two-piece exhaust, were added. Buyers can also choose power steering.
September of 1990. The model year brought about further changes in terms of cosmetics and mechanical. Its Phase 2 205 GTi received clear indicator lenses, smoke-filled rear lamp units, and new black trim and dashboard. The Bendix ABS brake system became an option, and the CTI was upgraded to an electronic hood. Seat belts for the rear became the norm.
September 1992: After 8 years of production and under increasing pressure from stricter emissions regulation, 1.6 GTi and 1.6 CTi production close. At this point, the cost was PS11,375.
October 1992: 1.9 GTi engine is re-engineered and equipped with a catalytic convertor. The power is reduced to 122bhp. Carpets in grey are usual.
April 24, 1994: The production of the GTi 1.9 and CTI 1.9 ceases. Keypad immobilizers were installed on the last versions. The cost of a 1.9 GTi had risen to PS12,265 while the 1.9 CTI to PS14,195.
The month of October in the year 2020. To commemorate the 210th anniversary of its founding, Peugeot revealed its plans to restore and market Peugeot 205 GTis.
It’s believed that it has already sourced parts for its museum craftspeople 3D printers, which can no longer create in-stock items. With the assurance of in-good-condition, expect them to be sought-after, with the price!
Through the Peugeot 205 GTi’s production period, several special editions were created, always worth checking out for a while driving or attending vintage car rally events.
Phase 1.5 Sorrento Green and Miami Blue
From 1989 to 1990, the firm expanded its color options in Miami Blue and Sorrento Green. The production of only 1,200 units was in that time, with purchasers getting the chance of sliding sunroofs and power steering and a gray leather interior. A few more regular Phase 2s are available in these colors, but they did not have the features that were available in those of Phase 1.5s.
In 1990 and 1991, lucky buyers from France, Germany, and the Netherlands could get a vibrant green color edition that came with numerous optional features. This included the interior of black leather, a panoramic sunroof, dark grey anthracite wheel, power steering, and ABS brakes. More than 1,600 copies of the Griffe editions were made.
The Peugeot 205 GTi was so well-loved within the UK market that, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of BBC Radio 1, they made a special edition for 1FM. Only 25 individual numbered cars were built with a variety of extra features. The cars were black in color with Radio1FM badges and decals, air conditioning, and ABS and power steering. The cars also featured the best sound system made by Clarion.
